Saptrishi Ashram is an old beautiful ashram located around 5 kilometres from Haridwar on the banks of Ganga (Sapt Sarovar).Established by Goswami Guru Dutt in 1943, Saptrishi Ashram is a well maintained complex with several rooms to stay. A residential hostel and sanskrit school is located within the complex for poor children.
Mythology Behind Saptrishi Ashram
According to Hindu mythology, Saptarshi (Seven Sages) Ashram derives its name because of the seven great sages Vashishtha, Kashyapa, Atri, Vishwamitra, Gautama, Bharadwaja and Jamadagni met at this place to meditate.
Hindus believe that when the sages sat here to meditate, they were disturbed by the thunderous waters of the Ganges. To continue with their meditation in peace, they trapped the River Ganges. Later, the Ganga split herself into seven small streams to avoid any interruption to the meditating sages. Hence, the Sapt Rishi Ashram came to be known as Sapt Sarovar, meaning seven streams.
Another story that appears in the scriptures is that the Pandavas passed through this place on their way to heaven and their idols along with their wives on the banks of the river still stand near the ashram.
History of Ashram
The Saptarishi Ashram, established in 1943 by Goswami Guru Dutt, is a well-organized complex with many rooms to live in. The Satnam Dharma Sabha spent lakhs on the renovations when it was ready Dr Rajendra Prasad the president of India, inaugurated it.
A residential hostel and cultural school for poor children located within the campus. The place is both spiritual and serene and is ideal for meditation.
Apart from being one of the tourist places in Haridwar, the ashram is also a place for students who live and learn with the saints. Due to its religious importance, sages and sages from all over the world respect this ashram a lot.
